Impact of Mobile Phones on Environment

Mobile phones have today become a necessity in our day to day functionality. The sudden boom in the market has lead to stiff competition amongst the giant corporations all trying to dominate the potential market. This means that cheap manufacturing and processes were developed for facilitating mass production. The impact of mobile phones on environment has since then become a concern. Most developed countries have stringent rules as to the manufacturing processes, waste materials, used materials, safety and disposal of the product at the end of its lifecycle.

However most multi national corporations try to take advantage of cheap labour and vaguely defined rules in developing countries for manufacturing toxic parts like batteries.

The impact of mobile phones on environment is highest once the used phone is disposed. Mobile phones and its accessories contain toxic heavy metals and other materials like cadmium, lead, nickel, mercury, manganese, lithium, zinc, antimony, beryllium, arsenic and copper.

These kinds of materials are not biodegradable and highly toxic. These bio cumulative materials contaminate the environment which in turn directly gets ingested into living organisms and can cause various diseases and adversehealth effects. Landfills used to
dump the waste are not sustainable. The Printer Wiring Board, Liquid Crystal Display and batteries account almost all of impact of mobile phones on environment. Most governments, especially in the developed countries, understand the need to counter the impact of mobile phones on environment.

They work in tandem with the stakeholders of the manufacturers to reduce the impact immediately. Concerns regarding the impact of mobile phones on environment such as disposal of used mobile phones and possible recycling systems at the end-of-life of the product are taken up strongly and implemented. Various restrictions such as ban on the use of certain materials like lead and some brominated flame retardants are already enforced strictly in Europe, Japan and US.
